Over the past ten years LASIK eye surgery has become a very
common form of laser vision correction. Millions of people have
had successful LASIK eye surgery. However, there are almost 30%
of people is not right candidates for Lasik eye surgery. The
most common reasons are :
-
Unrealistic
expectations All surgical procedures carry a certain risk, Lasik is no
exception. While most patients who undergo Lasik have
excellent outcomes, you should not expect perfect vision.
-
Pupils too
large Individuals with pupils that dilate beyond seven millimeters
in the dark are not good candidates for LASIK eye surgery.
The standard optical zone for LASIK surgery is 6.0 - 6.5
millimeters. Use of larger optical zones place patients at
higher risk for development of the vision-threatening
complication post-LASIK ectasia.
-
Eye health issues
Within the last year you would need to have had no eye
infections or injuries. Any herpes infections in the eyes
would disqualify you, since a LASIK procedure could cause a
recurrence of it. The dry eye syndrome is the common reason
for you are not right candidates for Lasik eye surgery too.
-
General health
People who has autoimmune disease such as Lupus is strictly
prohibited with Lasik eye surgery. It slow the healing
process make Lasik eye surgery a higher risk. In addition,
patients with conditions requiring medications such as
immunosuppresants and steroids are also considered
less-than-ideal because these medications also slow the
healing process and increase the risk of complications.
People who are pregnant or who are nursing are also not
considered ideal candidates for Lasik eye surgery. This is
because the shape of the eyes can be temporarily changed by
hormonal changes during these times of a woman's life.
-
Thin corneas
Patients that have evidence of keratoconus are not
candidates for LASIK or surface ablation. Some people have
thinner corneas than average, and this again would make
LASIK unsafe. A good candidates for Lasik will need to have
a healthy cornea with plenty of thickness and no signs of
diseases such as keratoconus and should be no scarring on
the cornea.
-
Cataract or Pre-cataract
Calculation of intraocular lens power for cataract
surgery is inaccurate after LASIK. This may result in poor
vision following cataract surgery and exposes patients to
increased risk of repeat surgeries. The steroid drops
routinely prescribed after LASIK may hasten the onset of
cataracts. So, people who has cataract or
pre-cataract is not a good candidates for Lasik eye surgery.
-
Extremely Low Vision
Lasik eye surgery is limited in the amount of vision
it can correct. Therefore, some people are beyond the
procedure's ability to help. The FDA does not allow
patients with more than +6.00 diopters of hyperopia or
–14.00 diopters of myopia to undertake the surgery. In
addition, patients with more than 6.00 diopters of
astigmatism are ineligible according to FDA standards.
