What is Custom & Wavefront Lasik? Cons & Pros
Custom Lasik surgery, also known as wavefront Lasik or wavefront-guided Lasik.
The primary difference between
Conventional Lasik and wavefront custom Lasik is the mapping
system that guides the laser.
If the surface of the eye were completely smooth, standard Lasik measurements
would yield the best possible result. However, the surface of each eye is
unique, containing minute topographic variations that affect vision in very
subtle ways. Standard of Lasik measurements do not detect these variations. The
custom Lasik surgery uses 3-dimensional measurements of how your eye processes
images to guide the laser in re-shaping the front part of the cornea.
Rather than simply being programmed to correct nearsightedness as in
conventional Lasik, the excimer laser is programmed to deliver a much more
complex ablation pattern in custom Lasik surgery to reduce or eliminate
higher-order aberrations as well as traditional refractive errors.
Average prices of Custom Wavefront Lasik eye surgery :
$2,000 - $2,500 per eye
The most popular wavefront LASIK procedures performed in the United States :
● iLasik
● VISX CustomVue
(iLasik & VISX laser platforms are the most popular, with an estimated Lasik
market share of over 52%)
● Allegretto Wave
● Zyoptix
Advantages of Custom Wavefront Lasik eye surgery :
Studies indicate that 5% - 10% of patients
significantly benefit from Custom Lasik treatments while other
patients may benefit to a lesser degree.
-
More people to achieve 20/20 or better vision post-operatively compared to Conventional Lasik.
98% of mild-to-moderately nearsighted patients could see 20/20 or better without corrective lenses.
100% of mild-to-moderately nearsighted patients could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses.
More than 95% of patients with mixed astigmatism could pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses.
-
Reduced chance of night vision disturbances or glaring
Four times as many mild-to-moderately nearsighted participants were very
satisfied with their night vision, compared to their night vision before
treatment with glasses or contacts.
● Corrects more distortions and higher order aberrations
● Ability to offer LASIK treatment to people with larger pupils
